The collage pieces in this zine are from my ongoing series, ‘Wildflowers of Palestine’, which is the visual result of a continuing research project; one that has recently become a passion. Much of the land of Palestine is rich, arable land, supporting a vibrant abundance of diverse flora and fauna – with Palestine’s ancient wild flora holding a huge historical, cultural, and environmental value to the Palestinian people – and many fascinating, unique, and endangered species. Israel’s ongoing occupation and genocide of Palestine is not only devastating to millions of Palestinians, but also to their homeland – and the rich, complex, generations-long connections every person and family has to the place where they belong.
All art is political, in one way or another, and in a world where so many people are struggling and fighting for their lives, I've never felt luckier for every happiness and privilege I have. I have lived all my life in the global northwest, and have watched for decades with rising horror as our governments continue to create, escalate, and support endless tides of violence and suffering in the name of power, control, and global dominance.
I stand in solidarity with all those suffering from displacement, apartheid, genocide, ecocide, violence and harm in Palestine, as well as those suffering from Israel's attacks on Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran. We must continue to fight the imperialist, systemic, cyclical sicknesses of greed, power, vengeance, violence and control that govern and manipulate us.
We all process things differently, but to me it sometimes feels self-indulgent – and even inhumane – to enjoy the beautiful parts of life when so many humans are suffering. I think, though, that joyful moments are necessary for us to stay hopeful, and combined with righteous anger, together we can harness our feelings to create change. Let's make noise, protest, donate, share, connect, create – and celebrate small, beautiful wonders while we can. Every life is equally precious, every life is sacred. From the river to the sea, free Palestine!
